This post is the first in a series of Blogger tutorials we will be publishing to help you setup and troubleshoot your Blogger blog.
If you’ve stumbled upon this post/tutorial via a search result, you’re probably trying to figure out why all or some of your Blogger blog’s post images have suddenly disappeared. In their place, you likely now have a gray circle with a big white dash mark in the middle of it or maybe a gray triangle with an exclamation point in the middle of it.
Or maybe you’re just checking out our blog and this hasn’t happened to you…yet. Even if your images haven’t mysteriously disappeared, keep reading so you know how to prevent this from happening to you.
The Case of the Disappearing Blog Photos
So, to start off our investigation into the disappearance of your images, let’s retrace a few steps. Have you recently deleted some photos or albums from your Picasa account, Google + account or on your computer in your Picasa app? Maybe you stumbled across some pictures in Picasa or Google + and decided to do a little clean up.
Well, then there’s a very good chance that this is the reason your blog photos are now missing. Deleting those photos deleted your post photos because when you upload a post image to Blogger, it is actually stored in Picasa and is visible on Google +. So, if you delete your images in Picasa or Google +, say goodbye to your blog post images.
Some Bloggers aren’t aware that when they upload photos to their blog they get added to their Google + account and when they find the photos on Google +, they delete the photos, afraid their Google + friends might see them. Well, never fear. Your G+ friends won’t see photos unless you share them.
Another issue to be painfully aware of is that if you delete the pictures in your Picasa computer app, it deletes the pictures from your computer not just the app. Picasa doesn’t create another copy of your pictures. It basically just makes an index of them instead, so be aware that if you remove a picture using Picasa, you are placing it in your computer’s recycle/trash bin. Now, yes, it is possible to recover your picture files from the trash bin as long as you haven’t emptied it.
So, now that we’ve figured out what likely caused the disappearing photos, let’s see what you can do to restore them.
Restoring the Vanished Photos
As mentioned above, if you deleted the photos via your Picasa computer app, you can restore the files from the trash bin if it hasn’t been emptied. A caveat is if you chose the “delete from disk” option in Picasa. In this case, you will not find the images in your trash bin. You may be able to recover the photos using recovery software. Or hopefully you have retained copies of the device on your camera or smart phone.
If you deleted Google + photos, you can restore them within 60 days of the date you deleted them. Sign into your Google account and visit Google Photos. On the left sidebar menu, click on More (ellipses or icon of three dots). A side menu will open where you can access your Trash folder. You can restore any of the photos still in your Trash. Select the photos you want to recover and click Restore. If you don’t see the photo(s) you’re looking for, they have been deleted and cannot be recovers via this method.
So, now you know why your Blogger blog post images may have disappeared and potential ways to fix it. Or, if this hasn’t happened to you, now you know: DON’T DELETE YOUR PICTURES FROM PICASA OR GOOGLE+ UNLESS YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE HAVEN’T USED THEM IN A BLOG POST.
